2021 Major US Store Closures and Openings
Year to date in 2021, US retailers have announced 2,190 closures and 2,201 openings for the full year. Our data represent closures and openings by calendar year, so these totals include announcements made in 2020 of closures and openings expected to fall in 2021.
This week, our updates for Amazon Fresh, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Läderach and Tempur Sealy changed the 2021 US openings count to 2,201. The 2021 US closure count remained at 2,190, with no closure updates this week. We have revised the 2020 US openings count to 3,328 with updates for Tempur Sealy.

Amazon Opens Third Amazon Fresh Store in Illinois
Amazon has opened its third Illinois Amazon Fresh grocery store in Oak Lawn. The retailer had earlier opened Amazon Fresh stores in the Illinois communities of Naperville and Schaumburg. The store in Oak Lawn will be the fifth new Amazon Fresh grocery store opening in 2021. The retailer operates a total of nine Amazon Fresh stores in the US as of February 17, 2021.
Dick’s Sporting Goods To Open Five New Stores
Sporting goods retailer Dick’s Sporting Goods has announced plans to open five new stores across five US states by February end. The retailer will open one Dick’s Sporting Goods store in Concord, North Carolina and four Warehouse Sale stores each in Friendswood, Texas; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Deer Park, New York; and Kissimmee, Florida. Dick’s Sporting Goods operates a total of 728 stores as of January 30, 2021.
Läderach To Open 34 New Stores
Läderach Chocolatier Suisse has announced plans to open 34 new stores across the US by the end of summer 2021. The Swiss chocolatier has entered into an asset purchase agreement with Godiva to take over 34 Godiva’s locations. With these new stores, Läderach Chocolatier Suisse will have 37 stores across the US. Our previous tracker reported Godiva’s announcement on closing all of its stores.
Tempur Sealy Opens a New Store
Mattress and bedding products retailer Tempur Sealy reported that it has opened one new store in 2021 and 21 new stores in fiscal year 2020 ending December 31, 2020. We had previously recorded 20 openings for 2020, to which we have made revisions in our US 2020 openings chart. The company operates 78 stores across locations in the US.

2021 Major UK Store Closures and Openings
Year to date in 2021, UK retailers have announced 1,060 closures and 185 openings for the full year. Our data represent closures and openings by calendar year, so these totals include announcements made in 2020 of closures and openings expected to fall in 2021.
This week, we updated the openings count for Asda, B&M, Heron Foods, Home Bargains, Lidl and Toolstation, which has changed the 2021 UK openings count to 185. The 2021 UK closures count remains at 1,060, with no closure updates. We have revised the 2020 UK openings count to 455, with updates for B&M and Lidl. With the update for B&M, we have updated the 2020 UK closures count to 2,451.

Asda To Open New Store in Newtownabbey
Supermarket chain Asda has announced plans to open a new store in Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland. The store, spanning around 40,000 square feet, will offer a full range of groceries and fresh food, a petrol station and free parking for up to 450 cars. The retailer operates 634 stores across the UK, according to its website on February 17, 2021.
B&M Plans To Open 18 New Stores in 2021
Variety store chain B&M has announced plans to open 18 new stores for B&M and eight new Heron Foods stores in the fourth quarter of 2021, ending March 2021. The company opened 27 new B&M stores and nine new Heron Foods stores in the calendar year 2020, and it closed 17 stores in that time frame (11 B&M and six Heron Foods). We have revised the openings and closures for B&M in our 2020 UK charts. The retailer has 673 B&M stores and 298 Heron Foods stores across the UK as of December 26, 2020.
Homebase To Open Three New Small-Format Stores
Home and garden retailer Homebase has announced plans to open three new small-format stores in Walton-on-Thames in Surrey. The retailer will refresh its Bathstore showroom on New Zealand Avenue to add a Kitchens by Homebase area. The retailer, which also owns the unit next to the Bathstore showroom, will open a Decorate by Homebase store and its first ever pop-up store. The retailer has a total of 151 stores and 15 standalone Bathstore stores across the UK and Ireland. As the retailer is transforming the existing spaces into new smaller-format stores, we have not included these as part of the new store openings count in our charts.
Home Bargains Opens a New Store in Faringdon
Discount retailer Home Bargains opened a new supermarket store in Faringdon, Oxford on February 13, 2021. With the new store, the retailer operates 522 stores across the UK.
Lidl To Open 50 New Stores in 2021
Supermarket chain retailer Lidl has announced plans to open 50 new stores in 2021. The retailer will open five new locations by February end—one each in Alvaston, Castle Irwell, Hackbridge, Lower Broughton and Royal Tunbridge Wells. We believe the retailer opened 51 new stores in 2020, although the exact number of openings has not yet been confirmed. We have revised the store counts in our 2020 and 2021 UK openings charts with the latest announcements. The retailer operates 800 stores across the UK market and plans to have 1,000 stores by end of the 2023.
Toolstation To Open 10 New Stores in 2021
Tools and building materials retailer Toolstation will open 10 new stores in 2021, according to its website. The retailer opened a new store in Corby on February 15, 2021. The new store openings will take the total store count of the retailer to 478 across the UK.
Walmart Sells Majority Stake in Asda for $8.8 billion
Retail giant Walmart has sold a majority stake in UK supermarket chain Asda for $8.8 billion (£6.8 billion) to the Issa brothers, founders of retailer EG Group and TDR Capital, a private equity firm. Walmart has retained a minority stake in equity investments and will have an ongoing commercial relationship and a seat on the board. The transaction has received approval from the Financial Conduct Authority, and regulatory approval from the Competition and Markets Authority is expected in the second quarter of 2021.
