2021 Major US Store Closures and Openings This week, we discuss updates for Amazon, Allbirds and Citi Trends. In light of these updates, our 2021 US closures and openings counts stand at 5,031 and 5,040, respectively. 2022: So far, we have tracked 613 closures and 576 openings for 2022. Charted breakdowns are shown later in the report. The charts below depict the week-by-week totals of announced US store closures and openings year to date in 2021 and 2020. For year-over-year comparisons, we are comparing closures and openings up to week 48 of 2021, ended December 3, 2021, to closures and openings tracked up to week 49 of 2020, ended December 4, 2020. Year to date in 2021, major retailers have announced 55.5% more openings and 39.4% fewer closures compared to the same period in 2020. Year to date, openings are ahead of closures by 0.2%—compared to closures being ahead of openings by 156.0% at the same time last year.

What Is Happening This Week in the US
Amazon To Open One store Amazon plans to open one Amazon 4-star store in Cherry Hill, New Jersey in the first half of 2022. The store will take the company’s Amazon 4-star store count to 34.
Quarterly Store Openings/Closures Settlement
Allbirds Provides Store-Count Update Footwear retailer Allbirds has opened four stores year to date in 2021. The company operates 23 stores in the US as of December 3, 2021. Citi Trends Provides Store-Count Update Apparel retailer Citi Trends opened 11 stores in its third quarter, ended October 30, 2021. The company plans to open 11 stores in its fourth quarter, ending early February 2022 and open 40 stores in its next fiscal year. The update takes the company’s 2021 openings count to 24 and openings count for 2022 to 41. The company operates 600 stores as of October 30, 2021.

2021 Major UK Store Closures and Openings This week, we discuss updates for Clarks, Foot Locker, Shoe Zone and Superdry. In light of these updates, our 2021 UK closures and openings counts stand at 1,506 and 1,044, respectively. 2022: So far, we have tracked 224 closures and 218 openings for 2022. Charted breakdowns are shown later in the report. The charts below depict the week-by-week totals of UK store closures and openings year to date in 2021 and 2020. For year-over-year comparisons, we are comparing closures and openings up to week 48 of 2021, ended December 3, 2021, to closures and openings tracked up to week 49 of 2020, ended December 4, 2020. Year to date in 2021, major UK retailers have announced 95.5% more openings and 37.5% fewer closures compared to the same time last year.

Clarks Opens One Store Footwear retailer Clarks opened one store in Street, Somerset on November 22, 2021. The company operates over 300 stores in the UK as of December 3, 2021. Foot Locker Provides Store-Count Update Footwear retailer Foot Locker has opened two and closed four stores year to date in the UK. The company operates 58 stores in the UK as of December 3, 2021. Shoe Zone Provides Store-Count Update Footwear retailer Shoe Zone has opened two stores and closed 26 stores year to date and plans to open one store in Barnstaple, North Devon on December 4, 2021. The update will take the company’s store count to 407. Superdry To Open One Store Apparel retailer Superdry plans to open one store in Cheltenham in December 2021.
