2021 Major US Store Closures and Openings This week, we discuss updates for Dolce & Gabbana, Earth Fare, Hermes, Johnny Was, Kmart, Mulberry, Nadeau, Parachute and Sears. In light of these updates, our 2021 US closures and openings counts stand at 4,933 and 4,981, respectively. The charts below depict the week-by-week totals of announced US store closures and openings year to date in 2021 and 2020. For year-over-year comparisons, we are comparing closures and openings up to week 38 of 2021, ended September 24, 2021, to closures and openings tracked up to week 39 of 2020, ended September 25, 2020. Year to date in 2021, major retailers have announced 58.7% more openings and 37.6% fewer closures compared to the same period in 2020. Year to date, openings are ahead of closures by 0.9%—compared to being 150.9% behind at the same time last year.

What Is Happening This Week in the US
Earth Fare To Open Three Stores Grocery retailer Earth Fare plans to open three stores in October 2021. The stores are set to open in Christiansburg, Virginia; Fairview Park, Ohio; and Lady Lake, Florida. The openings will take the company’s store count to 25. Luxury Retailers Open Stores in New Jersey Mall Luxury retailers Dolce & Gabbana, Hermès, Johnny Was and Mulberry opened one store each in American Dream mall in New Jersey on September 17, 2021. The openings take the US store count for Dolce & Gabbana to 82, Johnny Was to 57, Hermès to 39 and Mulberry to seven. Nadeau Opens Two Stores Home-furnishings retailer Nadeau opened one store in Minnetonka, Minnesota, on September 16, 2021, and one in Kansas City, Missouri, in June 2021. The openings take the company’s store count to 32. Parachute To Open Three Stores Home-furnishings retailer Parachute plans to open three stores by the end of 2021. The openings will take the company’s store count to 15. Sears Provides Store-Count Update Department store chain Sears closed 31 Sears stores, year to date, and plans to close an additional 15 Sears stores by the end of November 2021. The company also closed 17 Kmart stores and plans to close an additional two by the end of November 2021. The store closures will take Sears’ store count to 19 and Kmart’s store count to 16.

Chico’s Appoints New CFO Women’s apparel retailer Chico’s appointed Patrick J. Guido as CFO, effective September 20, 2021. Guido succeeded Interim CFO David Oliver, who has now returned to his role as Senior Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer. 2021 Major UK Store Closures and Openings This week, we discuss updates for Craghoppers and NIKE. In light of these updates, our 2021 UK closures and openings counts stand at 1,467 and 925, respectively. The charts below depict the week-by-week totals of UK store closures and openings year to date in 2021 and 2020. For year-over-year comparisons, we are comparing closures and openings up to week 38 of 2021, ended September 24, 2021, to closures and openings tracked up to week 39 of 2020, ended September 25, 2020. Year to date in 2021, major UK retailers have announced 80.0% more openings and 29.9% fewer closures compared to the same time last year.

What Is Happening This Week in the UK
Craghoppers To Open One Store Apparel retailer Craghoppers plans to open one store in Victory Square shopping center in Belfast during the last week of September 2021. The store spans 2,300 square feet and will take the company’s store count to 412. NIKE To Close One Store Sportswear brand NIKE plans to close its store in Gloucester Quays shopping center in Gloucester in October 2021. The store closure will take the company’s store count in the UK to 40.

McColl’s Appoints New Chief Operating Officer Convenience store chain McColl’s promoted Karen Bird to Chief Operating Officer, effective September 17, 2021. Bird replaced Dave Thomas, who served in the role for 23 years and stepped down in April 2021. Bird joined the company in 2016 and had served as Colleague and Operations Director since January 2020.
