This week, we discuss updates for Casey’s, Dillard’s, GameStop, Hermès, Schnucks, Vera Bradley and Vince Holding. In light of these updates, our 2021 US closures and openings counts stand at
4,624 and
4,217, respectively.
The charts below depict the week-by-week totals of announced US store closures and openings year to date in 2021 and 2020. For year-over-year comparisons, we are comparing closures and openings up to week 24 of 2021, ended June 18, 2021, to closures and openings tracked up to week 25 of 2020, ended June 19, 2020. Year to date in 2021, major retailers have announced 38.8% more openings and 4.0% more closures compared to the same period in 2020.

What Is Happening This Week in the US
Dillard’s To Close One Store
Department store chain Dillard’s plans to close a Dillard’s Clearance Center in Harlingen, Texas, by September 2021. The company operates 280 stores as of June 18, 2021.
Hermès Opens One Store
Luxury brand Hermès opened one store in Troy, Michigan on June 11, 2021. The store is located in Somerset Collection shopping mall and spans 3,100 square feet. The company operates 38 stores in the US as of June 18, 2021.
Schnucks To Close One Store
Supermarket chain Schnucks plans to close one store located in St. Louis County, Missouri, on June 27, 2021, citing low sales. The closure will take the company’s store count to 110.
Quarterly Store Openings/Closures Settlement
Casey’s Provides Store-Count Update
Convenience store chain Casey’s closed eight stores in 2020 and closed five in year-to-date 2021. The company operates 2,243 stores as of May 1, 2021.
GameStop Closes 118 Stores
Videogame retailer GameStop closed 118 stores globally in its first quarter, ended May 1, 2021. We estimate 80 of these closures to have happened in the US, taking its year-to-date US closure count to 131. The company operates 3,112 stores in the US as of May 1, 2021.
Vera Bradley Provides Store-Count Update
Luggage and handbag brand Vera Bradley opened one store and closed two in its first quarter, ended May 1, 2021. The closures have been previously tracked. The company operates 143 stores as of May 1, 2021.
Vince Holding Provides Store-Count Update
Luxury retail group Vince Holding opened four stores in its first quarter ended May 1, 2021, and plans to open 15 more by the end of its fiscal year, in early February 2022. We estimate 14 of the planned openings to fall in calendar 2021, taking its opening count to 18. The company operates 72 stores as of May 1, 2021.

Alex and Ani Files for Bankruptcy
Jewelry retailer Alex and Ani filed for bankruptcy on June 10, 2021, and is currently looking for a buyer for its assets. The company has also entered a restructuring support agreement with its lenders and equity sponsors that was implemented with the filing. The company will continue to operate its 74 stores during the bankruptcy proceedings.
Washington Prime Files for Bankruptcy
Mall real estate investment trust Washington Prime Group filed for bankruptcy on June 13, 2021, citing financial impact caused by the pandemic.The company secured $100 million in financing from debtors to continue day-to-day operations during the bankruptcy proceedings. The company operates 102 shopping centers as of June 18, 2021.

This week, we discuss updates for Amazon, Craghoppers, Crew Clothing, Debenhams, Disney, Flying Tiger Copenhagen, Holland and Barrett, Mere, Poundland, Poundstrecher, The Range, Tommy Hilfiger and Toolstation. In light of these updates, our 2021 UK closures and openings count increased to
1,295 and
732, respectively.

What Is Happening This Week in the UK
Amazon Opens One Store
Amazon opened one Amazon Fresh store in London on June 16, 2021. The store is located on the site of a former Evans Cycles shop on Chalk Farm Road. The new store is the company’s fifth in the UK since debuting its first store in March 2021.
Boohoo To Open One Debenhams Store
Boohoo Group, the parent company of Debenhams, plans to open one Debenhams store to help secure deals with major beauty brands that require a physical presence. Debenhams shut all of its department stores earlier in the year, and the Debenhams brand was acquired by Boohoo and relaunched as an online store.
Craghoppers Opens One Store
Outdoor clothing brand Craghoppers opened one flagship store in Edinburgh on June 8, 2021. The opening take the company’s store count to 12.
Crew Clothing Opens One Store
Apparel retailer Crew Clothing opened one store at The Central shopping center in Milton Keynes on June 10, 2021. The store spans over 1,600 square feet and takes the company’s store count to 99.
Disney To Close One Store
Disney plans to close its store in The Bridges Shopping Centre in Sunderland. The store closure comes as part of the company’s plan to move away from physical retail and focus more on e-commerce. The closure will take the company’s UK store count to 38.
Flying Tiger Copenhagen To Close One Store
Variety store chain Flying Tiger Copenhagen plans to close its store in Roath, Cardiff on June 27, 2021, and has begun a closing down sale. The closure will take the company’s store count to 84.
Holland and Barrett Opens Two Stores
Food and nutrition retailer Holland and Barrett has opened one store in Hull on June 11, 2021, and one flagship store in Coventry on June 14, 2021. The flagship store spans over 2,000 square feet and focuses on sustainability, with the interiors refitted using 100% recyclable materials, including its fiberboard, flooring materials, metalwork, plastics and wood. The company operates 232 stores as of June 18, 2021.
Mere To Open 300 Stores
Russian discount chain Mere plans to open over 300 stores in the UK in the next eight to 10 years. In May, the company announced plans to open 26 stores in 2021, with the first four stores set to open in mid-July.
Poundland Closes Two Stores
Discount retailer Poundland closed its Basildon store on May 29, 2021, and its Maidenhead store on June 16, 2021. The closures take the company’s store count to 687.
Poundstrecher Opens One Store
Discount retailer Poundstrecher opened a store in Lanarkshire on June 11, 2021. The store is located on the site of a former Poundland store and takes the company’s store count to 372.
The Range Opens One Store
Home-improvement retailer The Range opened a store in Gainsborough on June 16, 2021. The store is located in Marshall’s Yard shopping center and takes the company’s store count to 194.
Tesco To Open One Store
Supermarket chain Tesco plans to open a Tesco Express store in Ipswich in August 2021. The company operates 3,801 stores as of June 18, 2021.
Tommy Hilfiger To Open One Store
Apparel retailer Tommy Hilfiger plans to open a store in Derbion shopping center in Derby on June 21, 2021. The opening will be the company’s second store in Derby and will take the company store count to 38 in the UK.
ToolStation to Open 33 Stores
Home-improvement retailer Toolstation has opened 19 stores year to date and plans to open 14 more in 2021. The openings will take the company’s store count to 501.
