2020 Major US Store Closures and Openings
Year to date in 2020, US retailers have announced 8,688 planned store closures and 3,368 openings. Our data represent closures and openings by calendar year, so these totals include announcements made in 2019 of closures and openings expected to fall in 2020.
This week saw updates from Costco, Casey’s General Stores, Designer Brands, Michael Kors, Lululemon Athletica and Vera Bradley, and we updated our openings count for Earth Fare and Pet Valu which increased the 2020 US closures and openings counts.
2021: This week, we include our initial figures for announced US closures and openings expected to fall in 2021. So far, we have tracked 1,444 closures and 1,625 openings for 2021. See later for charted breakdowns.

What Is Happening This Week in the US
Designer Brands May Close Up To 80 stores
Apparel retailer Designer Brands has closed two stores and opened four stores in its third quarter, ended October 31, 2020, taking its store count to 524 stores in the US. The company, in its earnings call on December 9, also stated that it is likely to close 10–15% of its stores in the foreseeable future, which in the US could translate to a possible closure of between 50 and 80 stores.

Casey’s General Stores Updates Store Count
Convenience store chain Casey’s General Stores opened five stores and closed one store in the second quarter, ended October 31, 2020. The company operates 2,219 stores as of October 31, 2020. This takes Casey’s year-to-date openings to 33. Previously, we had charted 117 store openings for this year as per the company’s announcement in January that it plans to open 350 stores over a three-year period, but we have revised this estimate after taking into account the company’s year-to-date reported openings as of its latest quarterly release. For the calendar year 2020, we estimate Casey’s to have opened 57 stores on the basis of the company’s year-to-date openings and multiyear store expansion plan.
Costco Opens Six Warehouses
Costco opened six warehouses in the US in its first quarter, ended November 22, 2020. The company operates 558 warehouses in the US, as of October 31, 2020.
Lululemon Athletica Opens a Store
Apparel retailer Lululemon Athletica opened one store in the US in its third quarter, ended November 2, 2020. The company operates 314 stores in the US, as of October 31, 2020.
Vera Bradley Closes 10 Stores
Apparel and accessories retailer Vera Bradley closed 10 full-line stores and opened six factory outlet stores in its third quarter, ended November 2, 2020. The company operates 81 full-line stores and 69 factory outlet stores, as of November 2, 2020. We have accounted for these closures previously in our closures chart.

JD Sports Acquires Shoe Palace
UK sportswear retailer JD Sports has acquired footwear retailer Shoe Palace in a deal worth $325 million. Shoe Palace currently has 167 stores in the US with more than half located in California. JD Sports acquired 100% of both the issued shares in the Shoe Palace Corporation and the members’ interests in the Nice Kicks brand through its wholly owned intermediate holding company Genesis Holdings.

This week we updated our closure count for Aspinal of London which changed the UK store closure counts to 2,421, and the 2020 UK store openings count remain unchanged.

What Is Happening This Week in the UK
Frasers Group To Open Multibrand Store
Frasers Group has announced plans to open a 60,000-square-foot multibrand flagship store in Birmingham city center. The flagship store will house the firm’s Evans Cycles, Game, Sports Direct and USC banners, as well as a Belong e-sports arena, and is set to open between spring and summer 2021.

Arcadia Group Looks for Buyers for Topshop
Multibrand retail group Arcadia Group fell into administration on November 30, 2020, and the administrators are looking for bids of up to £200 million ($267 million) for its Topshop brand. The administrators are expecting to see initial bids for the fashion retailer filed by the end of next week. Boohoo Group is one of the major players expected to be linked to a prospective deal, while Mike Ashley’s Frasers Group has confirmed that it was considering purchasing Topshop, as well as other Arcadia brands. US retailer Authentic Brands is also reportedly in talks with the administrators.
