2019 Major US Store Closures and Openings
Year to date in 2019, US retailers have announced 9,083 planned store closures and 4,059 openings. Coresight Research estimates that US store closures could reach 12,000 by the end of 2019. By week 15 of 2019, year-to-date announced closures had already exceeded the total for all of 2018. We recorded 5,844 closures and 3,258 openings for the full year 2018. Our data represents closures and openings by calendar year.

Bloomingdale’s Opens First New Store in Four Years
Luxury department store chain Bloomingdale’s, a subsidiary of Macy’s, has opened a new store at SoNo Collection Shopping Center in Norwalk, Connecticut. The store is Bloomingdale’s first new store since it opened in Honolulu, Hawaii in 2015. The 150,000-square-foot store features Bloomingdale’s rotating, themed pop-up concept called The Carousel @ Bloomingdale’s. It also features spa rooms, a Gift Hub, a home-styling studio and a home department.
Coresight Research insight: This luxury department store is focusing on services and experiences to attract shoppers. A mix of relevant services provides retailers with additional opportunities to increase customer loyalty and the frequency of store visits.
Lululemon Opens at the Mall of America
Athletic-wear retailer Lululemon Athletica opened a 19,700-square-foot experiential store at the Mall of America, Minnesota on November 20, 2019. Apart from apparel for men and women, the store, which is Lululemon’s second-largest location, features an eatery serving a wide variety of beverages, food and snacks, including grab-and-go items. The store also features studio spaces that are equipped to offer yoga and other activities. The retailer had announced in June this year that it expects to open 15 to 20 stores in North America in 2019.
Coresight Research insight: Instore experiences have set Lululemon apart from other sports-apparel retailers since its inception. At the Mall of America, an extended assortment of healthy eating options serves to amplify the Lululemon brand as a healthy lifestyle choice.
Mark Cross Opens First Standalone Store in Three Decades
Luxury leather goods brand Mark Cross has opened its first retail store since the 1990s, in New York. Located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side at 667 Madison Avenue, the new store represents a shift in the brand’s retail strategy, which previously focused on wholesale and e-commerce only. The retailer stated in a press release that while wholesale and e-commerce will continue to play an important role in its retail strategy, the new store will provide Mark Cross the opportunity to connect directly to its customers in New York.
Recreational Equipment Furthers Retail Expansion
Outdoor apparel, footwear and gear retailer Recreational Equipment (REI) opened four new stores in a single day on November 15, 2019. The new stores are located in Utah, Alabama, Vermont and Oklahoma. Prior to these, REI opened three other stores this year, located in Alabama, California and Michigan. The retailer also plans to open stores in Florida, Kansas, South Carolina and Wisconsin in 2020.

Burberry Closes 26 stores
Luxury fashion retailer Burberry reported that it closed 26 stores during the first half of fiscal year 2020 ended September 28, 2019. The retailer has not disclosed information regarding the locations. These closures are part of the retailer’s previously announced plans to close 38 stores globally. Our charted closure estimate is based on the proportion of existing stores in the US.
Ethan Allen Opens and Closes Four Stores Each
Furniture chain Ethan Allen reported that it opened four company-operated stores, and closed the same number, in its first quarter of fiscal year 2020 ended September 30, 2019. Earlier this year, the retailer opened two and closed five company-operated stores over the six months ended June 30, 2019.
JCPenney Opens New Store Format
Department store chain JCPenney has reported that it opened a new store format in Hurst, Texas. The store features a new zone called “All-You,” which offers fashion jewelry and accessories, an in-store Sephora shop, a reimagined salon by InStyle, a barber shop called The Barbery and a “Movement Studio” that offers instructor-led fitness classes.
Kohl’s Confirms Opening of Four Small-Format Stores
Department-store chain Kohl’s has reported that it opened four small-format stores during the third quarter of fiscal year 2019 ended November 2, 2019. These openings realize the retailer’s previously announced plans to open four small-format stores this year.
Publix Opens Nine Supermarkets and Closes Two
Supermarket chain Publix has reported that it opened nine supermarkets and closed two during its third quarter of fiscal year 2019 ended September 28, 2019. The chain previously opened 13 supermarkets and closed three during the six months ended June 29, 2019. Publix operates 1,228 supermarkets in the US, as of September 28, 2019.
TJX Opens 69 Stores in the US
Off-price department-store chain TJX has reported net openings of 11 TJ Maxx, 18 Marshalls, 24 HomeGoods, 7 Sierra and 9 Homesense stores during the third quarter of fiscal year 2020 ended November 2, 2019. The chain operates 3,281 stores in the US, as of November 2, 2019.

Kroger To Launch In-Store Farms
Supermarket chain Kroger will introduce “Living Produce” farms at two QFC (a Kroger banner) locations in the Seattle area. The new concept, in partnership with urban farming network Infarm, will use hydroponic technology to grow kale, lettuce and other greens. Kroger expects to unveil these farms in 13 more QFC locations early next year.
Walmart Appoints New CEO for Sam’s Club
Walmart has appointed Kathryn McLay as Executive Vice President (EVP), President and CEO of Walmart’s Sam’s Club division, effective November 15, 2019. Since February 2019, McLay has served as EVP, Walmart US Neighborhood Markets. She succeeds John Furner, who was appointed as Chief Executive of Walmart US. McLay joined Walmart in April 2015 as Vice President (VP) of US Finance and Strategy. She was promoted to Senior VP of US Supply Chain in December 2015 and served in the role until February 2019.

What Is Happening This Week in the UK
Card Factory Continues Retail Expansion
Greeting card and gift retailer Card Factory has opened 12 new standalone stores during its second quarter of fiscal year 2020 ended July 31, 2019. Earlier this year, the retailer reported that it opened 26 net new stores during the six months ended July 31, 2019. These openings are a part of the retailer’s previously announced plans to open 50 net new stores in the UK and Republic of Ireland.
Steve Madden Opens First Standalone UK Store in 10 Years
Footwear and fashion accessories retailer Steve Madden has opened a standalone store in the UK, 10 years after closing its first store. The 1,552-square-foot store is located at Westfield London. The retailer also revealed plans to expand its retail footprint in the UK. The first Steve Madden store in the UK originally opened in 2007 but was subsequently closed, with the founder claiming that the Broadwick Street, London location was the wrong choice.
Urban Outfitters Opens Anthropologie Store in Belfast
Fashion and homeware chain Urban Outfitters has reported that it opened an Anthropologie store in Belfast, Northern Ireland, during its third quarter of fiscal year 2020 ended October 31, 2019. It is Anthropologie’s first Irish store. Anthropologie operates 228 stores worldwide, as of July 31, 2019.
Vans Opens Its Largest European Store in London
Footwear and apparel retailer Vans has opened a flagship store on London’s Oxford Street on November 21, 2019. The 4,714-square-foot flagship store is the retailer’s largest European location. The store will feature a Custom Lab where customers can customize their purchases. The store will also house Vans’ pro-skate and surf ranges.
Velasca Opens Debut UK Store
Italian footwear brand Velasca has opened its first UK store in London. The flagship store, located on Chiltern Street, Marylebone, offers a wide collection of Velasca’s accessories and shoes that are handmade in the Marche region of Italy.
