2019 Major US Store Closures and Openings
Year to date in 2019, US retailers have announced they will close 7,888 stores and open 3,239. Coresight Research estimates US store closures could reach 12,000 by the end of 2019. By week 15 of 2019, year-to-date announced closures had already exceeded the total for all of 2018. We recorded 5,844 closures and 3,258 openings for the full year 2018. Our data represents closures and openings by calendar year.
We revised down our total for US store closures due to revised estimates for Avenue.
What Is Happening This Week in the US
Acme Markets to Close Four Stores
Supermarket chain Acme, a subsidiary of Albertsons Companies, has announced it will close four stores in New Jersey and New York in fall 2019. Three stores located in New Jersey are slated to close on October 2 and one store located in Eastchester, New York, is scheduled to close on November 4.
Amazon Opens 4-star Store in Seattle
Amazon has opened a 4-star store in the Amazon office tower in Seattle and plans to open one in Boston. Amazon opened Amazon Books in Colorado in March and plans to open one more this year in Nashville. Two Amazon Go stores opened in New York in 2019 and the company plans to open three more stores, one in Seattle and two in Chicago.
Coresight Research Insight: The online giant is growing its physical shopping presence as it aspires to expand into further categories and reach more consumers offline. Sales at Amazon’s physical stores (mostly Whole Foods) grew 1% to $4.3 billion in 2Q19, and were dwarfed by revenues generated online ($31 billion) and by third-party seller services ($12 billion).
Home Depot Opens a Store
Home Depot reported it opened one new store in the US in its second quarter 2019.

What Is Happening This Week in the UK
Sports Direct Shuts Eight Jack Wills Stores
Sports Direct has shut eight Jack Wills stores in the UK and could shut more stores if it is unable to reach an agreement with landlords to lower rents. Sports Direct acquired Jack Wills out of administration in early August. The stores affected are located in Marlborough, Durham, Kingston, Derby, Reigate, Rock, Tunbridge Wells and St. Albans.
Truworths to Close 15 Office Stores
South African retailer Truworths has announced plans to shut 15 underperforming UK Office stores in the next two years, with the possibility of more store closures in the future. The retailer intends to focus on inventory management and enhancing its online offering to boost sales.
