2019 Major US Store Closures and Openings

Year to date in 2019, US retailers have announced they will close 7,567 stores and open 3,064. Coresight Research estimates US store closures could reach 12,000 by the end of 2019. By week 15 of 2019, year-to-date announced closures had already exceeded the total for all of 2018. We recorded 5,864 closures and 3,258 openings for the full year 2018. Our data represents closures and openings by calendar year.

What Is Happening This Week in the US

Tractor Supply Opens 15 Tractor Supply Stores and One Petsense Store

Tractor Supply reported it has opened 15 new Tractor Supply stores and one new Petsense store in its second quarter of fiscal 2019. As of June 29, 2019, the company has opened 25 Tractor Supply stores and two Petsense stores this year. These openings are a part of the company’s previously announced plans to open 80 Tractor Supply stores and 10 Petsense stores in 2019.

Coresight Research Insight: Tractor Supply is a one-stop shop for people living a rural lifestyle. With increased interest in the lifestyle, the company has seen comparable store sales growth above 3% for eight consecutive quarters. Petsense is leveraging growing pet spending in the US, expect to reach $75.38 billion this year from $72.56 billion in 2018, according to the American Pet Products Association.

Whole Foods Market to Open a Store in Kenwood

Amazon-owned Whole Foods Market announced it will open a store in Kenwood, Ohio, on August 29, 2019. The company opened a store in Weehawken, New Jersey on July 26 and plans to open a store in Toledo (Ohio) on August 7, 2019. The company opened six other stores in the first half of this year.

B&M Opens 12 B&M Stores and Six Heron Foods Stores

General merchandise retailer B&M reported the company opened 12 B&M banner stores and six Heron Foods stores in its first quarter ended June 29, 2019. The company previously announced plans to open 50 B&M banner stores and close five in fiscal 2020. It also intends to open between 15 and 20 Heron Foods net new stores in fiscal 2020.
