What Is Happening This Week in the US
Dressbarn’s Closure Plan on Schedule Clothing retailer Dressbarn has announced it will close nine Dressbarn stores this month and 53 stores by the end of August this year. The company previously announced it would close 25 stores in June. All are included in the 661 stores the company plans to close by the end of 2019. Toys “R” Us to Open Two New Stores Tru Kids Brand, parent company of Toys “R” Us, has announced it will open two new stores, one each in Houston and New Jersey. The new stores are a joint venture between Tru Kids and retail-as-a-service startup b8ta. These stores will be smaller in size and provide an interactive playground environment. Our openings total remains unchanged as these two new openings are included in previously announced openings for the year. Ross Stores Opens New Stores Department store retailer Ross Stores opened 22 Ross Dress For Less stores and six dd’s Discounts stores in June and July this year. These new openings are a part of the company’s previously announced plans to open 100 stores in 2019. Coresight Research Insight: Off-price retail continues to find opportunities in physical retail with its combination of value pricing, national brands and the experience of a treasure hunt. Limited merchandise creates a sense of urgency, driving conversion and sales. Giant Food Stores to Expand its Heirloom Market Concept Supermarket chain Giant Food Stores has announced it will open a Giant Heirloom Market in August this year in Philadelphia. The company opened its first Heirloom Market in January this year and plans to open two similar concept stores in Philadelphia in 2019. Skechers Opens Four Stores and Closes One Performance and lifestyle footwear retailer Skechers reported it opened four domestic warehouse stores and closed one store during its second quarter ended June 30, 2019. The retailer opened eight warehouse stores and closed three domestic concept stores in its previous quarter. GNC Plans to Close Around 900 Stores Health and wellness retailer GNC plans to shut around 900 stores by the end of 2020 with most of the closures planned at mall locations. This follows the company’s previous announcement in November last year that it expects to close between 700 to 900 stores over three years. Our charted figures are calendarized estimates for 2019. Coresight Research Insight: With health and wellness products more widely available across a range of retailers and online, legacy specialty retailers are at risk of losing their relevance.
