2019 Major US Store Closures and Openings
Year to date in 2019, U.S. retailers announced they will close 1,170 stores and open 1,176 stores. Our data represent closures and openings by calendar year, so these totals include announcements made in 2018 of closures and openings expected to fall in 2019.
What Is Happening This Week in the US?
Lidl Plans to Open Three Stores in Atlanta
German discount grocery retailer Lidl announced it plans to open three stores in the Atlanta region over a span of four weeks beginning in Powder Springs, followed by Snellville and Mableton.
Wegmans Set to Open Stores in Three New Markets
Supermarket chain Wegmans Food Markets announced plans to open a store each in New York City, North Carolina and Virginia, its first stores in these markets. The retailer which currently operates 98 stores in six states also plans to open another four stores in North Carolina in the future. We have not added the four North Carolina stores to our tracker currently as the company has not confirmed timelines.
JCPenney Announces Intention to Close Three Stores
JCPenney announced that it will close three stores this spring “as part of an ongoing evaluation of its store portfolio occurring over the next few months.” The retailer announced earlier this week that same-store sales fell 3.5% on an adjusted basis and 5.4% on an unadjusted basis for the nine-week period ended January 5. The company is expected to divulge further information on which specific stores will close on February 28 when it reports its fourth quarter and full year results according to a company press release.

Year to date in the U.K., retailers announced 225 store closures and 252 store openings. This data represents closures and openings by calendar year, so these totals include announcements made in 2018 expected to occur in 2019.

Hardy Amies Re-Enters Administration
Luxury fashion house Hardy Amies has collapsed into administration for the second time in slightly over a decade. A statement by accountancy firm Menzies confirms the retailer had been operating at a loss for a while. The retailer is looking for potential buyers.
