Foot Locker Plans to Close 165 Stores and Open 80 New Stores Globally Athletic clothing and footwear retailer Foot Locker has announed plans to shutter around 165 stores with an unspecified majority being US-based stores. As the company did not specifiy the number of US closures, we have not recorded the planned closures to our closures total. Additionally, the retailer stated that it plans to open 80 new stores, but did not specify how many of these would be in the US and so we have not recorded this number in our openings total. Victoria’s Secret Set to Shut 50 US Stores Women's lingerie, womenswear and beauty product retailer Victoria’s Secret announced that it will close 53 stores across North America this year owing to declining sales and poor store performance. Some 50 of the closures will be in the US and the remaining three will be in Canada. Peloton to Open 100 Stores Exercise bike brand Peloton has announced plans to open around 100 new stores this year to add to its existing network of 60 stores. The company, which has stores in the US, UK and Canada, did not specify the number of new stores that will open in each of these countries and so we have not included them in our US or UK openings totals. JCPenney Plans to Close 27 Stores Department store chain JCPenney has announced it plans to shutter 27 stores this year, which include 18 full-line department stores and nine home and furniture stores. This follows a 4% decline in same-store sales during the holiday quarter. “The stores identified for closure either require significant capital, are minimally cash flow positive today relative to the company’s overall consolidated average or represent a real estate monetization opportunity,” said the company. Gap to Close 230 Stores Globally Apparel retailer Gap Inc. has announced it will close 230 Gap stores over a two-year period, with 130 slated for closure in 2019. Most will be in North America, including some from Canada. The company did not give a specific number of stores that will close in the US, so we have not included these in our closures total. Our store closure data does not include temporary stores such as pop-ups. Many Amazon’s pop-ups are shops-in-shops rather than standalone pop-ups. Non-Store-Closure News Diesel USA Files for Bankruptcy Jeans, clothing and accessories manufacturer and retailer Diesel USA has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection owing to mounting losses, a fall in sales, expensive leases and multiple incidents of cyber fraud. The retailer does not intend to wind up its operations, but instead plans to exit some of its 28 stores as part of a plan to revive the Diesel brand in the US. The company’s court papers also describe a plan to open new stores and retrofit some old stores to make them more economical. Automotive Brand Tesla to Close Most Stores Tesla announced it would close most of its stores in a cost-cutting move. The company has 378 stores and service locations worldwide.
