We have expanded our coverage list to include more US retailers. We have updated our opening and closure charts for 2017 and 2018 to reflect this.

What Is Happening this Week in the US?

Sears Holdings Set to Close 40 US Stores Sears Holdings announced last week that it will close 40 stores in February 2019. These are in addition to the 142 store closures the retailer announced in October when it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. We have not updated our 2018 total with the latest round of Sears store closures as they will be completed in February 2019. What Is Happening this Week in the UK?

House of Fraser May Shut More Stores British department store retailer House of Fraser may closure more stores following landlords’ rejection of owner Mike Ashley’s rent proposals. After Ashley purchased the retailer out of administration for £90 million ($116.4 million), he stated he would save 47 of 59 stores from closure. While 12 stores are set for closure this year, that number could increase following the latest development.

Amazon Plans Holiday Pop-Ups Across Europe Amazon will launch holiday pop-ups called “Amazon Loft for Xmas,” November 16–26 in London and other major cities across Europe. The pop-ups will focus on electronics and toys, plus apparel, home goods and beauty.
