YTD 2018, the number of US store closure announcements stands at 5,006 and the number of store openings is 2,846.
What Is Happening this Week in the US?
Tapestry, the owner of designer brands Coach, Stuart Weitzman and Kate Spade, provided store opening and closure numbers for its first quarter of fiscal year 2019 when it reported results this week. In the quarter ended September 30, Tapestry opened seven stores and closed 13 across its three brands in North America. We have updated our tracker to reflect these numbers.

Banana Republic to Open Cos Bar Shop-in-Shop
Fashion retailer Banana Republic is experimenting with beauty by opening a Cos Bar pop-up shop in its San Francisco store on November 8. A company representative told Retail Dive that “Guests to the store will enjoy a VIP shopping experience, including opportunities to visit a new personalization shop, receive custom alterations and sit at a lounge bar in the store.”

YTD in the UK, there have been 1,314 store closure announcements and 777 store opening announcements.
What Is Happening this Week in the UK?
Evans Cycles May Close Around 30 Stores
British bicycle retailer Evans Cycles was recently bought out of administration by Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct and might close at least half of its 62 UK stores. Sports Direct CEO Mike Ashley said, “We are pleased to have rescued the Evans Cycles brand. However, in order to save the business, we only believe we will be able to keep 50% of stores open in the future. Unfortunately, some stores will have to close.” Sports Direct also bought House of Fraser in August. We await further information on the timing of these closures before adding them to our total for calendar year 2018.
