What Is Happening this Week in the US?

Gap’s Old Navy Brand to Open 60 Stores in 2018 Old Navy, a brand under the Gap umbrella, will open 60 stores across North America in 2018, pushing its total to more than 1,000 Old Navy locations in the US. Old Navy will remodel another 150 or so Old Navy stores to provide upgraded fitting rooms, bathrooms and checkout areas, among other more modern fixtures. Bankruptcy Court Approves Liquidation of Bon-Ton, Closing All 260 Stores The US Bankruptcy Court approved the asset purchase agreement between The Bon-Ton Stores and liquidators Great American Group and Tiger Capital Group. The approval means the retailer will begin liquidation proceedings, closing all 260 stores, without any bidders buying the assets. The liquidation of all Bon-Ton stores has begun and is expected to be completed within three months.

Brookfield Property Partners Plans “Retail Incubator” in New York Toronto based Brookfield Property Partners is planning a retail- and arts-based revitalization of 350 Bleecker Street and 367–387 Bleecker Street, a portfolio of seven retail storefronts across four properties in the West Village in Manhattan it bought for $31.5 million from New York REIT. The company plans to use the area as an incubator targeting online companies in search of brick-and-mortar operations. The Children’s Place will close 300 stores by 2020. Ascena will close between 268 and 667 stores by July 2019, depending on negotiations with landlords. Gap will close 200 stores by 2020. Vera Bradley will close 50 stores by 2021.

Mackage plans to operate 25 stores across North America in the next five years. Gap will open 270 stores by 2020. Costco has opened net 26 stores for the fiscal year ended September 2017, and plans to open net 25 stores for fiscal year 2018. In June 2017, Aldi announced it was aiming for 900 store openings by end-2022.

East to Cease Trading Next Week, Closing All Stores Beleaguered UK-based womenswear brand East will stop trading on May 4, as administrators failed to find a buyer within the three-month deadline. The brand once again fell into administration three years after the company was sold to Indian retail group Fabindia in a pre-pack administration deal and it closed 19 of its stores. East currently operates 34 stores and 15 department store concessions. The stores will continue trading until May 4, but gift cards will not be honored. Monsoon Accessorize announced in 2016 that it will close 141 stores as leases expire over the next five years.
