Tencent and the Pokémon Company announced they will collaborate on new games.
The release did not specify for which platform the two companies are developing the games; however, Tencent’s platform is the likely candidate due to its huge presence in mobile and PC games in China.
Tencent and Nintendo, which owns a stake in the Pokémon Company, will hold a press event on August 2 in Shanghai at which they are expected to announce the launch of the Nintendo Switch Game System in China.
Pokémon Go has been steadily updated since its initial launch, with the most recent update adding bad guys from Team Rocket.
Tencent is a leading mobile game company offering Honour of Kings, Game of Peace (formerly called PUBG Mobile), Crossfire and League of Legends.
The announcement echoes excitement surrounding the release of Pokémon Go for mobile devices in July 2016. The game, co-developed with Niantic, had amassed 26 million players at that time, surpassing even Candy Crush at the peak of its popularity. The game has been steadily updated since its initial launch, with the most recent update adding bad guys from Team Rocket.
