On May 17, Target announced the hiring of Mark Tritton as EVP and Chief Merchandising Officer (CMO). Tritton joins Target from Nordstrom, where he served as EVP and President of Nordstrom Product Group and oversaw the merchandising, design, manufacturing, marketing and omni-channel distribution of more than 50 private label brands across Nordstrom’s full-price and off-price retail portfolio. Prior to that, Tritton held positions at Timberland and Nike.
Target had been searching to fill the role of CMO since mid-2015, when Kathryn Tesija, who had served in the position for seven years, transitioned to an advisory role.
In his new role, Tritton will oversee enterprise buying, product design and development, sourcing, visual merchandising strategy, and merchandising transformation and operations. The CMO is responsible for selecting all of the merchandise that a retailer sells, and is often viewed as the second-highest ranking executive after the CEO.
Target also announced that Jason Goldberger will assume the newly created role of Chief Digital Officer and President of Target.com. Goldberger will be responsible for enhancing Target’s digital experiences and developing new digital capabilities. He joined Target in 2013 and was named President of Target.com and Mobile in 2014. Goldberger previously held positions with online retailers Gilt Groupe, Hayneedle.com and Amazon.
Both Tritton and Goldberger will report to Target’s Chairman and CEO, Brian Cornell, effective June 5.
With these two appointments, Cornell has filled the major holes in his senior leadership team with an equal mix of external and internal hires. Among the other additions to the team are Mike McNamara, who was brought in from Tesco to be CIO, and Cathy Smith, who came from Express Scripts to be CFO.
