Retail Sales Growth by Sector
After weak retail sales growth in May, June proved to be a strong month. A closer review shows that smaller retailers drove growth.
We saw solid growth at clothing stores (with a bigger increase at smaller clothing retailers). The that shoppers reacted positively to summer sales at clothing stores following slow consumption in the last month. Second-hand clothes saw a particular boost in June.
Furniture stores witnessed their highest sales increase since September 2018; Internet pure plays/mail order firms maintained growth momentum. Sales declines deepened at department stores/mixed-goods retailers, while declines softened at DIY stores. Grocery store sales growth remained unchanged from the previous month.

Online Retail Sales Growth
Total Internet retail sales grew 7.8% year over year in June, versus 8.6% growth in May. In June, Internet sales at food retailers were down 6.1%, the third decline in eight years (the first being in March 2019). Internet sales were up 13.0% at nonfood retailers and up 8.2% at nonstore retailers.
