Coresight Bites: UK Retail Sales Jump as Shops Reopen

  • In April 2021, total UK retail sales grew significantly year over year, due to the easing of lockdown restrictions and the release of pent-up demand.
  • While weak comparatives were a major factor in this month’s strong growth, April 2021 saw strong sales by any measure. Comparing to 2019 values, April sales still grew by a healthy margin, up from March’s two-year increase.
  • Online sales as a percentage of overall retail sales continued its downward slide, dropping below 30% in April 2021.
