1Q19 Results
Amazon.com reported 1Q19 revenues of $59.70 billion, up 17.0% year over year and in line with the consensus estimate.
EPS was $7.09, up 61% year over year and beating the $4.70 consensus estimate.
Results by Segment
- North America revenues were $35.8 billion, up 16.6% year over year, posting operating income of $1.7 billion, compared to a profit of $1.1 billion in the year-ago quarter.
- International revenues were $16.2 billion, up 8.9% year over year, posting an operating loss of $90 million, compared to a loss of $622 million in the year-ago quarter.
- Amazon Web Services (AWS) revenues were $7.7 billion, up 41.4% year over year, posting an operating profit of $2.2 billion, compared to $1.4 billion in the year-ago quarter.
Other segment data:
- Online store revenue was $29.5 billion, up 9.5%.
- Physical store revenue was $4.3 billion, up 1.0%.
- Third-party seller service revenue was $11.1 billion, up 20.2%.
- Subscription service revenue was $4.3 billion, up 40.0%.
- Other revenue was $2.7 billion, up 33.7%.
Details from the Quarter
Management commented it is working to transform its standard, two-day Prime shipping to one-day shipping.
Consumer electronics:
- Amazon Fire TV now has more than 30 million active users.
- Alexa now offers more than 90,000 skills from external developers in its store.
- Fire TV, Echo and Sonos devices in the US and UK now offer Apple Music.
- Amazon expanded Alexa features internationally, launching Echo Show in India, France, Italy and Spain. The company plans to launch Alexa in Brazil later this year.
- Alexa Auto launched for new vehicles including the Audi e-tron, and Amazon released new automotive-centric tools for developers.
- Amazon and Google announced that the companies will launch the YouTube app on Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Edition smart TVS, the Prime Video app will launch across Android TV device partners, with YouTube TV and YouTube Kids coming to Fire TV later this year.
Content:
- Amazon Studios gave the green light to more than 20 new and returning Prime Original Series, including content in Spain, Germany, India and Japan.
Whole Foods:
- Amazon and Whole Foods announced a third set of price cuts, offering lower prices on produce for everyone and expanded benefits for Prime members.
- Demand for free, two-hour delivery from Whole Foods Market via Prime Now continues to exceed expectations, and Amazon and Whole Foods are continuing to grow their service offerings. Delivery from Whole Foods market via Prime Now is available in 75 US metropolitan regions, and grocery pickup at Whole Foods is available in 30 metros, with plans for further expansion later this year.
Delivery:
- Amazon Day, which gives Prime the members the option to select a day for delivery, became available to US Prime and Business Prime members in the quarter, and millions of Prime members are now using the service.
- Key by Amazon, in which Prime members can have packages delivered securely to their home or car, is now available in 50 US cities and surrounding areas.
- Amazon announced Shipment Zero, which aims to make 50% of shipments net zero carbon by 2030.
AWS:
- As part of its goal to power all AWS global infrastructure with renewable energy, Amazon announced renewable energy projects in Ireland, Sweden and the US.
- New AWS customers include Gogo, Lyft, the L.A. Clippers, Standard Bank Group and Volkswagen.
- AWS launches in the quarter included AWS Asia Pacific (Hong Kong) Region and AWS Asia Pacific (Jakarta) Region. AWS now provides 64 availability zones in 21 global infrastructure regions, with plans for another 12 availability zones in four regions in Bahrain, Indonesia, Italy and South Africa.
Outlook
Amazon offered the following guidance for 2Q19:
- Net sales of $59.5-63.5 billion (up 13-20%), in line with the consensus estimate. This figure includes a 210 bps impact from foreign exchange.
- Operating income of $2.6-3.6 billion, below the $4.2 billion consensus estimate.
